Here is a little bit of proof that less markup is better for search engine optimization.

The other day at work we were trying to find a font we had downloaded at one time for a project. The name of the font was Marquee.

When I searched google for “font + marquee“, the first page of results had descriptions with font and marquee tags in bold. In fact, I had to go to page 5 of the results to find a site without those tags in the description, and even then it was a site showing you how to use the font and marquee tags in HTML.
