iMac G5

Apple released official information today about the new iMac G5. As expected, the machine is designed to be an all-in-one unit, reducing the clutter usually associated with desktop computers.
Building on the design of the previous iMac, this model goes even farther, removing the base and putting all the electronics behind the display. As one of my co-workers said, “it’s an iBook without a keyboard attached.”
The ports are all on the back of the machine, offering the options of attaching 3 usb devices, 2 firewire devices, ethernet, modem, and speakers. The headphone jack doubles as a mini-optical plug. That allows for 5.1 surround sound if you want it. You can also add an Airport Extreme card, which would futhur reduce desktop clutter and allow you to place the iMac at any location in your home or office. In addition to wifi, you can also add internal bluetooth, which would allow you to use a wireless keyboard and mouse, meaning the only wire you would have is your power cable.
I have had an iMac G4 on my desk here at work for about 2 years. I mostly use it for testing and building our hybrid CDRoms. I have long said that the next desktop I buy for the house (if I ever do) will be an iMac, and now that statement is more true than ever.
