WordPress 1.5

I upgraded my site to WordPress 1.5 last night and overall I must say this is an excellent upgrade. Even though there have been significant changes in the admin interface and (i assume) the way that certain aspects of the application work, I had no problems upgrading.

In addition to upgrading, I also decided to clean up my site structure a bit and move my blog out of the /wp subdirectory that it was sitting in. It now resides in the root directory. I was still able to perform the normal upgrade procedure. The only additional thing I had to do was go into the database using phpMyAdmin and change my site URL so that it did not redirect me to a directory that no longer exists. Once I did that, I was able to login and get to work on evaluating the new backend.

I really like the way the templates are set up now. Instead of having one big template file, it is broken out into includes. There are seperate files for the header, the footer the sidebar, the comments, the post, etc. It makes it easier to edit the site template using the built in editor. In WP1.2.x, I always ended up copying the template and editing it offline, then either uploading the file via FTP or pasting it back into the template editor.

I think the Dashboard is a nice addition. It pulls in various WordPress related items from around the blogosphere and helps you keep up with what is going on in WP Development.

The one thing I am looking forward to messing around with is the Write Page feature. A new feature to WordPress 1.5, it allows you to create and manage pages using WordPress. Could this be the next step in making WordPress a more fully rounded Content Manangement Utility?

All in all this is a solid release from Matt and Company and can’t wait to see where they take WordPress development from here.

Update: WordPress 1.5 is now an official release. Read about it at the Dev Blog.

I just upgraded as well, even thought I had been using the nightly builds for some time. WP 1.5 is very nice. I kind of like your site right now, is very clean and open. I know you are working on something new, but no reason to hurry :)

Yeah, just sort of threw this together real quick. I will probably start adding stuff back bit by bit, but I am sort of enjoying this for now.

Jeremy, I upgraded last night from a beta and my database bit the dust for some reason. I backed it up before I upgraded but its in a tar.gz file and the backup files extentions are .myd, .myi and .frm and my host (startlogic.com) is having trouble restoring them for me. I’m becoming a bit agitated with them as you can imagine. I had a decently visited blog with lots of content and comments I do wish to ‘dissapear’…grr…

YOUR site, however, looks great. I look forward to any stylist changes you choose to make. I’ve always admired your site for its use of white space and ‘clean’/minimilistic feel.

Sweeeet — I like the clean new look ;)
Now that WP 1.5 is out in the wild I will finally get off my butt and finish my own redesign.

I too have really enjoyed the upgrade to 1.5. I used it in beta because I wanted to play with all the themes abilities prior to official release. The betas were amazingly stable showing how great the continued upgrades will be.

Might want to throw a 301 redirect from your old feed location to your new one. I thought your blog went down or something ;)

  8. Jeremy has spoken:

    Thanks for the tip Vinnie.

Redirect has been added. I had manually rolled it adding some text about moving the RSS feed, but the 301 worked a lot better.
