On RSS and Information

I have become an RSS addict. I have 250 feeds in my reader (NetNewsWire), and that number grows every week.
One thing that bothers me is when RSS is not implemented properly. Lets take, for instance, the recent addition of RSS to the Wall Street Journal. I subscribed, thinking it would be a good resource for current news on tech and stocks and things that the Journal usually covers, and it has been. What I did not expect was that every time they would post news items to the feed, I would have to re-download the entire feed, rather than just downloading the latest editions. It seems that they don’t clean out their feed when they add new items, so it just seems to grow each day. The RSS feed currently has 95 items in it, with the last item dating back to March. C’mon guys, get with the program.
Of course there are some news sites that I have just about stopped visiting all together because they don’t offer any kind of RSS feed. Take al.com for example. This is the most popular site in Alabama and also has the news from 3 of the states biggest newspapers: The Birmingham News, The Mobile Register, and The Hunstville Times. They also have news flashes that they seem to keep fairly fresh as events happen throughout the day. Why this site does not offer an RSS feed is just beyond me.
So that is just my little rant on RSS feeds for the day.

Hey Jeremy,
Have you checked out Feedfire? It lets you ’screen scrape’ an RSS feed from any webpage. The free version can’t be tweaked, but if you pay for it apparently you can tweak their parameters to make sure the feed collects the right links.
I’ve been using it to read the local paper here, The Decatur Daily, who also doesn’t publish an RSS feed. This feed here scrapes this page here.
There’s some problems following links out of the feed that require manual editing, but I think I could fix that if I were to create another feed, this time without including the index.* at the end.
Also, for example, the Drudge Report can be scraped for an RSS feed that works better than the DrudgeReportArchive’s feed.
Just thought you might like to know.
