City Stages To Allow Laptops
UPDATE: An addition has been made to the list of Do’s and Don’ts on the City Stages FAQ page. Now, under the Don’ts list, it reads “Backpacks, except laptop bags carrying a computer.”
Many of you (in the Birmingham area, at least) may have seen the announcement that TechBirmingham and SouthernLinc were teaming up to make Linn Park a free wireless hotspot, with the service going online just in time for City Stages.
This sounded like great news until many started to realize that backpacks aren’t allowed inside the gates of City Stages. Since many people carry their laptops in a backpack, this seemed to make the hotspot a null point for the weekend of the festival.
Curtis Palmer of TechBirmingham fame left a comment last night on an earlier post of mine with a statement about an exception being made in the case of laptops.
We will make an exception to the backpack rule as follows:
if you are bringing a laptop in a normal, laptop bag with none of the
contraband items listed on the site, you may enter.
I will share this with security people tomorrow at the meeting, but
keep in mind it is a last-minute change, so ask people to be patient
and understanding, especially on friday.
So it sounds like it will be a little easier to take your laptop to the festival now. I doubt I will be lugging my 17″ MacBookPro down there just because of its size, but I could see someone with a 15″ or , even better, a 12″ laptop toting it around, popping it open to blog about a show they just saw or upload some pictures to the City Stages Flickr Group before heading off to catch another act.
Do you plan on making use of the free WiFi while at City Stages?
