City Stages 2006: The Allman Brothers Band and Taylor Hicks

After a great Father’s Day and a mid-afternoon trip to Tuscaloosa, Jana and I headed for downtown to take in the closing hours of City Stages 2006. We set up camp at the Miller Lite stage, where the Zac Brown Band was playing their version of Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic. After they wrapped up with their semi-well-known hit Chicken Fried, it was time for The Derek Trucks Band to take the stage.

This was my first time seeing them in concert (although I have seen Derek with the Allmans twice) and they were great. Vocalist Mike Mattison has a great range and Derek was tearing it up on the guitar. They ran through a few tunes and jammed out, setting the stage for The Allman Brothers Band.

The Allman Brothers Band came out strong with Revival, rolling into Statesboro Blues after that, and they just didn’t stop. There were some great suprises, including covers of Into The Mystic and Walk On Gilded Splinters. The biggest suprise of the night was probably Taylor Hicks joining the boys on stage to play harmonica on One Way Out.

All in all, a great festival set from the ABB. They played for roughly two and a half hours, including an extended drum solo and jam session. This was my third time to see them, and still no Whipping Post. Maybe next time.
