How to track iPhone visits in Google Analytics

ga

We were having a discussion around the office yesterday about how to detect visits from an iPhone to a website. Since it is essentially a full blow version of Safari, there aren’t many signs that would differentiate the iPhone version aside from the browser ID string.

One of the unique features of the iPhone is its screen resolution. The official screen area is 320 x 480. once you factor in the address bar of the Safari browser, that screen size drops to 320 x 396. This is the key.

Open up your Google Analytics profile and select Visitors > Browser Capabilities > Screen Resolutions. Now go to the filter box and type “396″ and click Go. This should return a single listing showing the visits by browsers with a resolution of 320 x 396. If you don’t see any, you probably haven’t had any iPhone hits.

If you get a high amount of iPhone traffic for one reason or another, you could probably create a second profile for the same domain in Google Analytics and filter it to only show the iPhone resolution.

Just found that Analytics detects many new gaming platforms, so we could expect that iphone will be added soon.
