How to sync ringtones to your iPhone

Tags: , , , .

Apple turned on the ringtone feature in iTunes today. You may need to restart iTunes and you will get a message saying that the service is now available.

The process of creating the ringtone is easy enough, although out of my 2500 songs, maybe 50 were ringtonable. After I selected a song and the 30 second portion I wanted as a ringtone, it was done.

When I tried to sync it, however, I got a message saying that the ringtone “was not copied to the ihone because you are not authorized to play them on this computer”. Apparently a lot of people were having the problem because the service has been active for maybe an hour and there is already a post mentioning it in the Apple support forums.

Apparently, after you create the ringtone, you have to play it in iTunes. When you do, you will be asked for your iTunes account information and it will re-authorize you to play that song. I think this is basically authorizing the iPhone to play the ringtone.
