Helvetica In Birmingham

Tags: , .

I was giving a tour of Kinetic to a group of students from Samford the other day and Scott Fisk, their professor and a friend, told me that Helvetica will be screened at the Brock Recital Hall on the campus of Samford University on Tuesday, November 6 at 6pm.

For those who don’t know, this film has been making the rounds at screenings all over the world. It is about the font Helvetica, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and the effect it has had on our culture. From the official site:

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.

Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day.

If you plan on going, make sure you RSVP. They have 300 seats, but need a good head count so they don’t overbook the venue.
