Camino 1.0
For the past year and a half I have been using Firefox as the default browser on my Powerbook. Its a good browser, very quick to render out pages and load up whatever I want to view. I also liked having my browsing environments virtually identical on two different platforms.
The one area in which Firefox has lagged on the Mac is start time. It has never been an “instant-on” kind of thing, often getting beat by Safari and other Mac browsers. I overlooked that, however, and forged on with the browser. All the while, I have been testing out other browsers on the Mac platform, due in part to my wanting to be up-to-date on any browsers that hit the scene. Shiira is kind of neat, although I am not completely sold on it. Opera works on the Mac, but I have never been a fan of its UI. I have also never really used OmniWeb, so I can’t say anything good or bad about it.
Then there is Camino. I started tinkering with Camino when it was still Chimera and have quietly watched as the project has progressed. With the 1.0 release, Camino has really come into its own as a great Safari alternative for OS X browsing. I have been using it for almost a week now and have enjoyed every minute of it. Its definitely fast. Fast loading, fast rendering…just fast. The interface looks great as well.
If you are on a Mac and are looking for a Safari-alternative, give Camino a shot.
