WordPress SEO and Analytics: WordCamp Birmingham 2009

So I am back at the house after an awesome day at WordCamp Birmingham 2009. I gave a presentation today on SEO and Analytics for WordPress. I went with a new style of speaking this time. In the past, I have created slides that had bullet points for each thing I was talking about, and would always just end up basically reading those back.

What I did for this presentation was use my slides to show the general idea of what I was talking about, and then just talk about it. I was able sort of let the information flow, rather than worrying whether I mentioned each point that was on my slide. To prepare for the presentation, I basically wrote 5 pages of rambling about SEO and Analytics. I wrote it in the same sort of style I would use if I were just talking to someone one on one. Then, I went back through and pulled my main points out and created slides for them. I had my notes handy as I was talking, but I don’t think I even looked at them once.

I think the talk went pretty well. I got some great compliments via Twitter and appreciate everyone that came to hear me ramble on.

The slides have been posted on SlideShare, although they may not make much sense if you weren’t at the presentation.

Nice post. The most interesting thing to me was the taxonomy for tagging, which I had no idea even existed.

Can you elaborate more on the “Genius Bar”? Did they have people in charge for specific issues/problems? Could you have just walked up to anyone to ask questions? How did the pairing up occur?

I attended WordCamp and pleased I was right up front for most of the presentations! Thanks for your detailed review of the sessions you attended. I missed Mitch’s session on security.

Obviously I’ve missed Skribit news along the way. I had a widget on my site a year ago (+/-) and removed it since no one ever used it. Catch me up to date, please. I’m around the corner in Marietta.

Paul, you tied everything in nicely in this post so now I know where to go when I want to refer to each of those slide shows in 1 spot. (I’ll give you the traffic not slideshare).

To me, the best part about the whole thing was the community aspect. There were lots of people there with very diverse backgrounds. Some were developers or designers, some were WP users, and others as we learned during Matt’s talk weren’t even using WP yet. Nevertheless, we all had a common thread… we’re passionate about WordPress.

I don’t think we actually met while there, but I’m sure we’ll get to meet FTF soon. I’m planning to become much more active in the ATL WordPress community. Any suggestions on what to get involved in?

Forgive me if this is a noobtastic query, but how did you get Twitter comments to post to your blog? Is there a WP plugin for that?

Stammy, I’m looking for a good tutorial on how you transfer posts from one user to another under WP. Good write up, thanks.
